Introduction
Shanghai General Hospital is one of the oldest comprehensive hospitals in China, and also one of China's first Tier 3 comprehensive hospitals. The pathology department of Shanghai General Hospital is one of the largest among out of Tier 3 hospitals in Shanghai and it applies uses some of the leading diagnosis technologies.
Challenges
  • As the gold standard of medical diagnosis, pathology results are known as the "doctor's doctor". However, the lack of qualified doctors and heavy workloads have always been huge obstacles in the field of pathology. Even though the digitalization of microscope slides has enabled doctors to conveniently read slides on computers, it is still very time-consuming to find microscopic malignant regions on pathology slides that can reach up to 10 billion pixels in detail. A large amount of pathology slides are generated in daily examinations, screening, and follow-up endoscopy checks in the Shanghai General Hospital . For example, over 200 slides are generated for gastrointestinal tracts alone, which totals to about 50,000 slides in a year. Furthermore, there are only between 3 – 5 doctors who specialize in gastrointestinal screening,. meaning each doctor is responsible for over 10,000 slide images annually.
Result
The pathology department of the Shanghai General Hospital uses the SenseCare Smart Health Platform mainly to assist in the diagnosis and analysis in gastrointestinal pathology. A large amount of image data is quickly processed using artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, and the traditional method of manual determination for gastrointestinal pathology is upgraded to a smart AI-assisted method. The SenseCare pathology platform is able to quickly analyze digital specimen slides of gastrointestinal tracts and identify whether the specimen is benign or malignant. This optimizes the resource allocation of pathology doctors. If the system detects a benign slide, the doctor can quickly confirm the screening results. If the system evaluates a malignant slide, a senior doctor can re-diagnose to confirm and classify the type of cancer. Currently, the product is able to detect many common types of cancerous lesion regions and high-risk abnormal cells. The time to read a single pathology slide is reduced by 60% and the time for a doctor to release a diagnosis report is reduced from 5 days to 3 days. The product can detect a high-risk disease in the gastrointestinal tract with up to 100% accuracy while excluding a negative specimen with over 80% accuracy, effectively increasing the pathological screening efficiency in hospitals.
